In the mid-2000s, environmental and engineering consulting firm Haley & Aldrich was battling growing commoditization in the AEC industry and enduring the impacts of a global recession. Clients were demanding lower costs, which drove us to find ways to deliver greater value and gain a better understanding of our clients and their needs. We discovered Lean through working on a project with Boeing and recognized that Lean could not only improve our service delivery but could also strengthen every facet of our company. As a result, Haley & Aldrich embarked on a Lean journey through respecting and honoring our culture, encouraging new insights and innovation, engaging and empowering people doing the work, and focusing on improving our client experience. This is our story of how we are deploying Lean to different corners of our business, from work processes to strategy deployment to staff development. We’ll use the Star Model to show how we integrate Lean into our operations and share the challenges and growing pains that we experienced along the way. Ultimately, our Lean journey has led us to strengthen our culture and improve our staff and client experience through meaningful work.
